(Portland, Oregon)—April 2014—First Book Portland will award more than $8,600 worth of books to eight (8) literacy programs that serve children in need in Multnomah, Washington and Clackamas counties. Through the purchasing power of the First Book Marketplace, the programs will be able to select 3,440 new books for local at-risk children.
The 2014 grant recipients are:
Children in these programs will receive new books over the course of the year, which will enable the children to start their own home libraries that they can share with their siblings and families. The children will also receive a bookplate on which to place their names, celebrating the importance of book ownership.
First Book Portland is part of First Book’s national network of volunteer-led teams that provide new books to children in need in communities across the country. These book grants were made possible through local fundraising efforts by First Book Portland and through the support of local businesses and individuals.
First Book Portland has been distributing books to programs serving children in need since 1998. Our all-volunteer team draws it members from area nonprofits, agencies, businesses, and the community. First Book Portland was delighted to be chosen by the Rose City Rollers as their Community Partner for the first quarter of 2014!
Rose City Rollers presented First Book with a check for a whopping $1,000 during the Season Opener at the Memorial Coliseum on January 18th. We also collected 138 books from fans and league members on behalf of the Children’s Book Bank.
To conclude the partnership, on March 29th we hosted the Rose City Rollers skaters for a story time at Green Bean Books. The shop generously donated 10% of all books sold during the event to help share the joy of books with children in low-income families. And as you can see, a good time was had by all!
(Portland, Oregon)—March 2013—A new children’s book, Ogilvy, the Pig Who Whistled, is a pig tale with something more than a stack of great reviews: a dual mission of boosting children’s self esteem and supporting the work of the Portland, Oregon, chapter of First Book, a national non-profit providing new books to children in need.
The book, released by Whistling Pig Publishing for four-to-eight year old children, shares the lesson of “why there’s nothing better than being you” through the adventures Ogilvy the Pig and his barnyard friends. It is charmingly illustrated by internationally-acclaimed artist Stefano Trainito, and makes the perfect bedtime read.
“Ogilvy, the Pig Who Whistled encourages children to read, and helps them feel good about themselves,” said author and Whistling Pig Publishing founder Pam Abrahamsson. “This is our publishing mission, which is why we are happy to support First Book Portland and its mission of getting books in the hands of needy children by donating a portion of proceeds from the sale of the book.”
“As part of a committed team of children’s literacy advocates, we highly encourage support and involvement from the Portland community,” said Nicole Sligh, Co-Chair, First Book Portland. “The need for books for our local children is so great, we welcome creative giving partnerships such as Whistling Pig Publishing’s donation program, and we invite the community to get involved in ways which work well for them.”
The five-star-review-winning book is available in print and eBook formats through Amazon. (Prices are $1.99 for Kindle and introductory pricing of $5.62 for the soft back version.) Readers can also follow Ogilvy’s adventures on Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter.
Whistling Pig Publishing is an independent children’s book publishing house founded in 2013 in Portland, Oregon. Its mission is simple: to encourage the young, and young of heart, to be the best they can be through story telling. Whistling Pig Publishing is launching a line of books which share—through the eyes and story of Ogilvy the Pig and a colorful cast of barnyard characters—the special joys of being yourself.
